Company Overview

Bayakha is a Zulu word meaning: “they are building; bringing forth or producing; creating.”

Established in 2016, Bayakha seeks to respond to the demand for transformational infrastructure finance by targeting areas where gaps or backlogs in economic development have not been adequately addressed by the dominant financial institutions and/or government.

Bayakha is an advisory and specialist private markets fund manager licensed by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority as a Category II financial services provider (FSP number: 47414) and is a member of the Southern African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SAVCA) and was part of the inaugural SAVCA Fund Manager Development Programme.

The Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium (SIDS) demonstrated a recognition on the part of the South African government of the benefits of an infrastructure-led growth plan. According to SIDS, South Africa needs an investment target of at least 30% (from the current 16% to 18%) to transform herself into an investment-led economy. It is time for a focused approach to implementing South Africa’s Economic Recovery Plan and rebuilding the economy.

In addition, Covid-19 had an adverse impact on the South African economy and has reduced the government’s ability to play a larger role in direct infrastructure finance, thus a targeted approach aimed at drawing the private sector into the national infrastructure investment plan is central to the success of South Africa’s Economic Recovery Plan. Recent amendments to Regulation 28 of the South African Pension Act seek to facilitate this increased participation by South African pension funds in infrastructure development.

The core team at Bayakha boasts extensive expertise in advising, modelling, structuring, and investing in energy and economic infrastructure projects across the SADC region. Their collective experience encompasses over 100 infrastructure projects, viewed from various angles, including investor, advisory, lender, and shareholder perspectives.

Our flagship fund, the Bayakha Economic Infrastructure Fund expects to make equity and empowerment financing/structured equity investments into eight to ten qualifying, brownfield and late-stage greenfield renewable energy and other economic infrastructure projects (such as water, transport and ICT) in South Africa (SA), primarily, and to a lesser extent, select parts of Southern African Development Community(SADC).
